For the STN Fall Nationals, there were other middle schools competing in our category. There were two teams competing from CKMS for the same category. One team was Kelli, Brooke, and Lindsey. The other team was made up of me, Ben, and Micah. The other schools who were competing were from Waianae Intermediate, Valley Middle School, Maui Waena Intermediate, and many more. Knowing that those other have produced many excellent videos, I was kinda skeptical on weather we were gonna even have a chance at placing. But after the first day of the competition, my thoughts changed about our chances of winning. I felt more determined to finish. And since we had two teams from the same school, that doubled our chances of winning.
Every school year, our class will produce two News Feature stories to try and get onto Hiki No. We make one video for first quarter, and a second for 2nd quarter. So we basically get 2 months to make 1 video. Thats a lot of time. But when you suddenly tell us to make a video in 6 days, it gets a little overwhelming. We usually spends 2-3 weeks of filming, 1 weeks of script writing, and the rest of the quarter to edit the video. We have time to reschedule interviews and make some mistakes, but if you make mistakes during the competition, you will be miserable. On the first day of the competition, we filmed about 95% of our interviews and that gave us an advantage being able to figure out the story within the first day or two.
But despite all odds, we finished and it was all worth it. Some people say that the only way to get over your fear, is to face it. So that is what I did. And I ended up liking it so much that maybe I might even do it again this year. Media is always easier once you have been in media for at least a year because you will know what you are doing. Both teams from our school ended up placing in the top three. Lindsey, Brooke, and Kelli placed third, and Micah, Ben, and I placed first so it was worth all the long and hard days.
So if you are thinking of doing this years Fall STN Challenge, you should give it a shot if you want to. Even if you don't win, it will still give you a good experince. At least its not as hard as the Spot Feature competition at the STN Convention. You only have 5 hours to make a 1:30 minute news story. 2 hours to film and 3 hours to edit. I had to do that with Leanna and Kaden, but against all odds, we ended up winning 1st place so it was a really fun competition. We didn't even get an interview until we were 1 hour into the filming deadline. Anyways, thats about it, so until next time, bye!
